Well. Someone was getting drunk by themselves in a corner of the party early, weren't they?
As Bernard nursed a glass of party punch—how low was the alcohol content in this, anyway? Probably low enough to let soldiers drink without getting properly drunk, Bernard figured—he sulked and recalled why he was so selective about who he interacted with. Mood foul thanks to his bruised pride, he brooded by himself on a balcony overlooking the arrival of more guests to the ball. As he was a very large man, this one cup of punch did almost nothing for his level of wasteness. Hell, he didn't even feel buzzed yet.
How disappointing. He could stand to be merry since the complete embarrassment from a few minutes ago scorched him through. If this had been a different time, a different place, he would have challenged the Counselor right then and there. Would he have lost? Perhaps, given her reputation and specialty, but he'd be damned if he was to take that in stride. This was why his father insisted nobility reach certain standards, he supposed; otherwise rough tongued creatures like that would run amok. And that captain! The amount of disrespect she'd shown him but not giving her name right off the bat—she was from Newhaven, hm? That was fine. He'd have a word with her Lady if he didn't catch her alone again at the ball.
Despite how truly enraged he was at the social fuck-up, his posture remained like that of a soldier awaiting response. The glass looked ready to shatter for the amount of pressure he was putting on it, and realizing this, he put it down on the table nearest him.
With that, he grumpily crossed his arms and continued to glare off into the distance.
His persian had made herself quite at home in the mean time, laying across the stone floor like she owned the joint.
“… I think I’m going to start training directly with the troops again,” he muttered under his breath.

for all the air that's in your lungs Having been given a break, Seth had snagged some food. With nerves and all, eating breakfast hadn't really been a thing. Despite how it might look to have a soldier trying (and failing) to be discreet about stuffing his face, Seth was doing it. He said he wouldn't be gone long for his break--guarding a counselor was serious business and he needed to stay on top of that--so he was trying to be quick.
Halfway through biting into a sandwich, Seth spotted his noble off in the corner. The man even looked like he was hiding. What would a man like that be hiding from? Seth was under the impression he liked hunting for the ladies; it's not like there weren't enough fancy women here tonight.
Reluctant glances were thrown between the food table and Mr. Goldsmith. Seth grabbed a couple more snacks and made his way over. He supposed a few more minutes wouldn't hurt anyone.
It took a couple minutes to get through the crowds, but Seth joined his noble in the corner, "Enjoying yourself, sir?" He was clearly not, but there was a need for the formality. Hopefully Mr. Goldsmith would see it as a sign of respect, even though Seth was slowly eating bite-sized, crunchy things from his hand. 213 ― this one's not so fond of women either lol MADE BY KAIZU OF GS & TWF

At once, Angel was circling Seth, licking her lips. She didn't mean him any harm, but something in his hands smelled meaty and she hadn't eaten since before the party started (thirty whole minutes). The persian's eyes were trained upon the boy's hand.
It was only Bernard giving her a sharp glance that kept her from taking it off for the treats.
"Angel. Sit. Stop," he commanded before facing Seth properly. He frowned. Should he tell Seth what had actually happened? Hm... no. First of all, because the ordeal with the captain was horrifically embarrassing. Secondly, he wouldn't live to let anyone know he'd been brushed off like a Counselor like that. "This party isn't my style," the man offered, lips curling a bit. At least someone still respected him enough to have some manners, though. "I assume it's more of a young people's thing."
He frowned.
"Like the music."
Looking the boy over, he couldn't help but crack a smile. "I take it you ended up on duty regardless?" He could remember choking down snacks when doing long shifts guarding this and that, important people, important things, important places. "Make sure to get plenty of water, alright?"

for all the air that's in your lungs Kitty had followed Seth over, only a couple paces behind. At the threatening pacing from the Persian, the Luxio got rather defensive. Her haunches went up and her eyes narrowed. Kitty, always the protector.
Seth didn't even notice the exchange between the Pokemon, focusing on his food and the conversation instead. He glanced over at the DJ booth and shrugged, "I kinda like it. There's been a good variety, too." There was even a span of time where just classical music was played. Didn't he see Mr. Goldsmith dancing then?
"Yeah, mom made a call." He shrugged, not seeming to favor the posting. He seemed a little embarrassed as he got another bite of sandwich. He tried to talk but then abruptly realized he should not try to do that thing. He chewed and swallowed, "Will do, sir." There were drinks circulating, he would have to grab one later.
Most of the food Seth had brought over was gone--he internally chastised himself for not offering any to Mr. Goldsmith--but he was happy to stay and chat for another couple minutes. Perhaps they could touch on the subject matter of a certain dinner party? Seth had been positively aching to find out more about the noble's plans. He wondered just how high he was on the list of potential heirs. 219 ― seth has no chill MADE BY KAIZU OF GS & TWF

Another cat might have back down. Not Angel. Turning her interest in the luxio instead, she cocked her head, sniffing. Her tail swished behind her once before she raised a paw, aiming to lightly bap the electric type on the cheek with a paw. She was trying to play since she was so painfully bored, but would Kitty understand Angel's intentions?
"They have." He didn't chide Seth. He was, what, 19? That was his music.
Bernard raised a brow, noticing Seth's seeming lack of enthusiasm. Most young soldiers were eager to prove themselves. "... is that other little boy here, or was there someone else you were trying to meet?" Might as well be frank. He had too much faith in the old ways to think that Seth was begrudging his mother for simply getting him a chance to prove himself. Surely there was another matter?
There was a brief pause. "What are you stationed doing?" he double checked. Seth and two or three other soldiers who had appeared that night he remained very interested in. However, the remaining two he knew were at home in Whitecoast--one was learning from a captain how to rule patrols and the other was helping guard the power station. Bernard was asking about Seth's business so he could plan his night. Now that he knew his potential heir was here and he had confirmation beyond his own suspicion that Spectre might rear its ugly head, it was a good time to see how the boy played out. When it came time for the execution, that luxio might prove useful in putting down any potential upstarts.

for all the air that's in your lungs Having met them in the past, Kitty knew the noble's Pokemon weren't the most trustworthy. At least in battle, they tended to have a reputation for brutality. Seth was nervous and uncomfortable about the party, so that meant Kitty was, too. Seeing Seth on edge only amplified her need to protect him from what she could. When the not-very-familiar Persian went to bap her, it would connect with an invisible wall instead of a Pokemon cheek. This wasn't meant maliciously, but more as a precaution; if Angel didn't get aggressive, Kitty might come out to play. Kitty's unease, however, was clearly shown by the sparks popping up in her fur.
Feeling the commotion, Seth looked down to see the Pokemon about to go at it. He said the Luxio's name in a warning tone and took a couple steps away to be out of the danger zone. Though his attention was now divided, Seth was focusing on the conversation.
'Other little boy'? Who was Mr. Goldsmith talking about? Wait... No! He wasn't talking about the guy Seth had a crush on, was he? Fuck. Had he really been so obvious about it? He had only been staring at the kid for the entire dinner party and making googly eyes. Seth really shouldn't underestimate people like this. He blushed instantly out of embarrassment upon the realization, "I haven't really been looking for anyone here, no." It was the truth: Seth had a job and he was sticking to it. Er, well, when he wasn't on break. "I've been posted on guarding the Council, sir." As if they needed guarding. Each member of the council had Pokemon of their own, and they were more than a match for Seth or anyone else, really.
As for his mother sending him here... Seth hadn't asked for it. He was much more comfortable in Whitecoast, where things were familiar. Here, there was danger everywhere, what with the riots and the Spectre threat. His parents had insisted on going to the ball, saying Whitecoast needed to be represented in whatever happens in the future. He supposed they wanted him to come along, but a soldier only has so much leeway, has to follow his orders. So they had gotten his orders changed. He grumbled about the uneasy situation as a whole, but eventually decided it would be better to keep them safe in whatever way he could. Two more Pokemon for the Empire's side at least. 410 ― sorry if i get repetitive sometimes, i forget what i've already written and what i've just planned out in my head >>; MADE BY KAIZU OF GS & TWF

Ignoring the sparks in the other cat’s fur—what was her problem?—Angel was only momentarily baffled when she encountered protect rather than her intended target. When had the luxio thrown that up?! Still, her experience told her that it would only last so long. So, to make a game of it while it existed, she reared up on her hind paws, pressing her full weight against it. The mountain lioness wasn’t heavy enough to dramatically influence the protect, but time would run out eventually.
For now she entertained herself by bouncing her weight off it. Maybe she might fall on top of Kitty when it broke!
Seeing what was going on and how nervous Seth had gotten, not to mention his luxio, Bernard finally put an end to it. “Angel, behave, or I’ll bring out CJ. He’s got proper manners.” There. A chiding. Then, if she disobeyed, into her pokeball she would go.
But that was unnecessary. The persian let out a low, miserable mewl before finally backing off her junior, sulking with her jaw resting on the balconey.
Continuing on the subject of courtship, Bernard let out what might pass for a growl. It was just a grunt, but all the disgust and irritation from earlier pulled through. “That’s probably smart. I keep forgetting why Whitecoast is so well off. We’re the most civil.” Not like this mannerless savages. “Well, that’s not true,” he relented. “That was rude of me. Individuals are… tasteless, but as a whole the Empire is extremely civil.”
Sure, Bernie. Keep choking down that hot fresh propaganda and shit it out for the masses to consume as well.
“Really, now?” He was definitely going to keep the boy near him if something happened. He had a Counselor he favored now and one he wouldn’t too much mourn if she ended up in the hospital. (Not dead, though; she was too important for that.) “Well, congratulations. Clearly everyone sees your potential.”
Hm. They’d spent enough time outside. “Here. Let’s head back.”

for all the air that's in your lungs Angel wasn't seeming too antagonistic, just playful. Still, Kitty was on edge and trying to be professional, quite the reflection of her master. Once the Persian started bouncing on the wall sent up by Protect, Kitty let out a sound somewhere between a growl and a meow. It would roughly be translated to "stop that, you fool" if Pokemon could talk. They, however, could not.
After just a couple of those bouncing motions, Kitty sidestepped and Angel would find nothing but air as she fell back down. They didn't get much of a chance to explore each others' personalities, though, with Mr. Goldsmith shutting it down and shortly after whisking Seth away.
As the noble talked and tried to figure out what he wanted Seth's young, impressionable ears to hear, the boy nodded and just listened. He was trying to process and find his own opinions. There was something to appreciate on all levels, from individuals to groups as large as the Empire itself. At the level of one person, you get such uniqueness, and there's quite a lot of value in that and in thinking for yourself. He could see where Mr. Goldsmith was going saying the Empire was 'civil'. As a whole, the Empire wanted peace. Perhaps some of their harsher tendencies should be mitigated, but the Empire kept everyone safe and happy. Or, at least Seth had never seen otherwise.
Then the noble moved on to talk briefly of the counselors. Seth knew how important they were, and he supposed his post of guarding them was important as well. He should probably be heading ba--"Pote--" Not only was Seth's train of thought cut short by the compliment, but his words were as well as Mr. Goldsmith started to shuffle him out of their corner. His face had lit up, eyebrows going up in astonishment. Mr. Goldsmith hadn't already made a decision regarding his heir, had he? "S-Sir!" Seth tried to inquire, but he doubted he would get very far. 332 ― just shut him down (or ignore him) lol poor seth MADE BY KAIZU OF GS & TWF

“Don’t stutter. I’m taking you to meet someone impressive.”
Despite the confusion Seth faced, Bernard was all confidence.
Maybe that was a reflection on their relationship—previously, the Lord had been rather blue. But, what did it reflect? Did the big man just need someone lower on the totem pole than him to kiss up, make him feel important again? Or, did he require the familiarity of another Whitecoast native? Who knew.
However, the Lord was now full of his typical charm and confidence. He’d lead Seth into a battle most glorious! He returned Angel, knowing she wouldn’t be suitable.
ooc: end!
