Redwell. Leo had to admit the decrepit old place had it's charms despite the lack of life compared to the other cities in the region. But that didn't matter because this place was safe. Or as safe as it could be. Okay being brutally honest there was nowhere 'safe' in a land where your every move was monitored closely. At least here the young teen didn't have to worry too much about overly inquisitive eyes. While he did his bit of travelling along the routes whenever he risked it, the blonde was a familiar sight on the streets of this particular town and didn't cause as much intrigue when sighted.
"Okay that's the last of it." Hands held a small piece of a sticky, oaty substance up toward his shoulder. The joltick that perched there wasted no time in latching onto the hand itself rather than take the food himself. Another thing Leo found favourable about Redwell was the lack of needing to keep Scruffy at bay. Though he was no member of the revolutionary faction himself he didn't mind offering up some intel he picked up here and there during his goings; if he had anything to offer that is.
He rose his hand back to eye-level to spectate as the joltik furiously devoured the minuscule remnants of Leo's oat bar. He sweatdropped. "Slow down Scruffy," he chided. "Or you'll get hiccups," Leo added and afterthought. "...again."
As expected he went unheard. A small huff through his nose he was left to watch what people there were in the district go about their business with a bored expression from the crates he sat himself upon. He never was one for people watching; but he often found himself doing so unconsciously since his little inner thief seemed to passively scout potential marks. A growl emitted from his lower abdomen, informing him the pitiful meal-bar didn't do the trick.

◄ Safe.. Not exactly a word Arel would use to describe his current situation. Redwell was calm enough, to be sure. Calmer than the other cities, anyway. No screams or fires or nagging guards. No responsibilities. But.. He still felt like he belonged to the empire. After growing up in a noble household, having no qualms with how things were run (him in charge, of course), it was as if he didn't have the right to really sit among these people. So he'd stayed quiet. Shut his mouth, kept his head down, and slipped through them as if they were one and the same. He was a good liar- had to be. But for the first time it came with a twinge of guilt. As if he were somehow hurting them just by skirting the truth.
That was a stupid notion, and he dismissed it quickly.
Shaking his head, a tiny yellow fluff caught his eye. On the shoulder of a tiny boy. Cute.. Arel had seen Joltik before, but never really up close. His family had preferred more "noble" pokemon, not adorable ones. Didn't stop him from admiring it, though. From afar, obviously. No way he was going to draw attention to himself just to pet it. No way. ... Oh yes way.
"Is it friendly?" His voice was soft and hesitant as he walked up behind them, bending down to get a closer look. "It's very cute." Damn, always drawn in by the fluffy ones. Took everything he had not to just scoop it up right then and there. The usual treats he kept for Kon shifted in his pocket, and he nicked a couple, offering them up for either to take if they wanted.

Leo'd be lying if he said he wasn't caught off guard now and then. He was too prideful to admit it outright; although he did a pretty good job of masking the wide-eyed expression that wanted to overtake him. Nailed it. Or so he thought until he saw scar scar scar. That was the tipping point and unfortunately Leo found himself staring longer than he thought necessary.
With an embarrassed flush dusting his cheeks he averted his gaze. The joltik on his hand ceased his nibbling to stare at the stranger, motionless; bug-eyes narrowing suspiciously. "He's...kinda," The blonde managed to get out a few words. working over the mild shock. "Depends really." He cleared the frog in his throat and chose to resort to his more aloof persona. Trapped between wanting to continue eating and keeping an eye on this newcomer the tick settled for keeping stern eye-contact and eating in a much slower manner. Yes. His intimidation tactics were flawless. Too bad they'd been tossed out the window the moment he'd been offered a type of food he'd never before seen; and therefore never tasted.
While Scruffy was waving his stubby little forelegs in an effort to reach the treat, Leo felt himself cringe at the sight of the scar. It seemed even more painful up close. And like anyone his mind began to conjure up all manner of events leading to it's creation, but he wasn't as tactless as to ask outright. Least of all from an individual who seemed so capable of violence. Then again he had that outlook on every adult he encountered. Still, there was a plethora of ways such an injury could be obtained. And if this guy could put up with what Leo thought to be immense pain he had to have some kind of strength to him. He didn't doubt for a second his suspicion that he was in the ranks of Spectre or at least affiliated with them.
"You're gonna get a stomach ache you damn glutton." He mumbled under his breath. 'Haven't you heard the saying never take candy from strangers...' Scruffy paid him no heed, giving a small, victorious chirp when he acquired his prize and promptly devoured it. "Cute is one way to put it. I don't know where all that food goes..." Life would be a lot easier if he had the money to carry around batteries for the little tick to feed from but alas, it wasn't meant to be. "So was that all you wanted?" It would have been relatable to a 'go on, be off with you' tone of voice and perhaps it would have held a bit more sway (or as much sway as a kid his age could achieve) has his stomach not rumbled again. Dusty blush was back full force. Scruffy paused eating at the sound, turning from his place on his human boy's hand and offering the remnants of his candy he'd yet to devour.
"Ah," he faulted. "It's okay Scruffy. You finish that."

◄ "Ah.." Arel jerked back slightly at the initial reaction, eye(s) widening in turn. He hadn't exactly meant to surprise him or anything, but what had he been expecting? Nothing. Hadn't thought it through at all yet again. Sure, just walk up to strangers and offer them things you have in your pockets. Seemed to have a bad habit of doing that, actually. The whole not thinking things through part, anyway. Not the giving away candy to random kids part. Still hadn't fully grasped how odd it must look.
The stares, however, didn't go unnoticed. Passing over his mutilated face with a grim expression. For a second, fear shot down his spine with a jolt. He'd forgotten already, what he'd done. When he saw stares, it was accusatory. Angry. Every horrible thing that this could possibly mean for him pounded at the edge of his mind, and a few dreadful seconds passed this way- stone still seconds that felt like hours. Until finally he realized, fingers shooting up to his face. Oh. The burn scars. Breath rolled out of him like a gale, and he nearly smacked himself in the head. He doesn't know you.
With the initial anxiety out of the way, he seemed to calm near instantly. He ran fingers through his hair, an absent-minded habit he never quite got rid of, eyes half closed in a sort of peaceful trance as the little bug chomped through the Konpe faster than he'd anticipated.
"My apologies, I didn't mean to scare you." He laughed, a quiet, polite laugh that didn't seem to suit his looks. "Honestly, I just can't resist pokemon." All pokemon were cute to him, so saying 'cute pokemon' would just be a waste. "Does he have a name? I doubt it's glutton." Another light, sprinkled laugh. "Though the name could suit him."

Liked pokemon eh? Well now that was something he could relate to. They'd never really been a big presence in his life personally until the little bug came along. It was from that budding friendship he began to think the region's laws in regards to banning pokemon training stupid. Not to say he'd done much training himself. There was never many opportunities, however despite his small stature Scruffy displayed some curious skill for what Leo presumed to be a wild pokemon. As curious as he was in the beginning he didn't bother dwelling on the subject.
It was discerning to think he was actually letting himself become comfortable in this guy's presence, not that he let it show. But the dismal air lightened a little, enough to calm the kid. Even so, he still found the candy thing downright creepy and made a mental note to lecture his companion on certain levels of trust later. He didn't want the little guy to get pokenapped after all.
"Mmm...s'fine," He huffed out, looking a little unsure. Gaze anywhere but the man's eyes. "I um, I didn't mean to stare." He held his tongue before it could ask how such a thing befell him. And it flustered him, like any other youngster, to have to croak out an apology but Leo took what pride he could in how genuine it sounded. Honestly he could be a spiteful little urchin when he wanted but even he had morals when it came to sensitive topics. Well, maybe not so true. There were times he lacked a certain level of tact but such occurrences were more so the result of being overly-curious on his part; along with a lack of certain knowledge.
Lips pursed comically. "I'm starting to rethink my naming choice." Golden-orange eyes looked at the joltik in annoyance but there was an obvious glint of affection in his gaze. With his 'meal' finished he saw fit to recline himself onto his back atop his human's lap and looking at the boy expectantly. With a sigh and a small smile tugging at his lips he reached down to administer the long awaited belly-rub. "But Scruffy is Scruffy. No point in giving him a new name, he likes it." They were granted an affirmative chirrup. His namesake had come from the sorry, soot-stained state Leo had found him in back in Valedge. At first a derogatory term toward the bug that wouldn't cease bugging him.
"So..." he drifted before asking another question that had been nagging at the back of his mind. "You're with Sceptre then." The tone of voice left it as more of a statement. Being the observant youth he was Leo was all but certain in his assumption; since there were very few inhabitants of Redwell who weren't involved with the group in some way. The vibe he got from this stranger made him think him more than a simple sympathizer to the cause like himself.

◄ A gentle smile dusted his lips as the boy visibly relaxed, his tiny bug settling into a sleepy posture. Pokemon were an.. interesting subject for Arel. Everyone in his family had them- just as all noble bloodlines did. Kept as tools and instruments of war, used to control the city they kept under their thumb, and not much else. Arel had been no different, really. Except with Kon. Even as the babe Deino grew, he could never really do much besides loaf and play, and Arel simply couldn't bring himself to punish him. The goodnatured Hydreigon slept peacefully in his pocket opposite the candy. Leave the two too close together and there's no way he'd stay in his ball. "Again, sorry.. The candies, their Konpe's favorite." He held up another, letting out a soft snort before popping it in his mouth. "Can't get enough of the stuff. So I figured your Joltik might like them." Normally, they were a little on the expensive side. Not something he could really afford without his wealth. But Arel had bought them enough times to have looked over the bag often. So now he made them himself. Sure, they probably weren't as good, but they were cheap to produce, and Kon seemed to like them well enough. Or maybe the pokemon just didn't want to insult his master. "They're pretty much just food coloring and sugar, really.." The mention of stares jerked him out of his dreamy state, causing him to wave his hand in dismissal. "Don't worry about it. I catch myself staring, too. Still haven't quite gotten used to it." His skin still ached, leathery and rough to the touch. It even felt hot on bad days, but Arel was pretty sure it was just his imagination getting the better of him. He didn't go any further into detail. Honestly, he wasn't even really sure how to explain what had happened. He couldn't exactly come out and say he'd done it himself. Supposed 'the Empire did it' was his best bet, but. That wasn't much of a story, now was it? Again, lost in thought when the boy asked his question. Am I in Spectre? Well.. "Yeah, I am. I assume you're hanging around here because you sympathize?" The kid seemed smart enough, so he doubted he'd have asked the question if he planned on ratting them out or something. "Name's Jay. Mind telling me yours?" Leo Falkov

He nodded in agreement. If Scruffy's obvious contentment was anything to go off of then yes, he most definitely did like them. "Konpe?" Leo blurted out in confusion. "What's a Konpe?" His head tilted in confusion. The name was unfamiliar to him, despite being young he and his family didn't have very much to 'waste' on frivolous things such as candy often. Let alone the expensive stuff. He wondered briefly if it was some species of pokemon he'd yet to hear of. Which was always a possibility; there seemed to be a never ending variety of them in the world.
From the brief remark toward his skin's imperfection it was obvious there was no delving further into the sensitive subject, so Leo left it at that. As calm and well-mannered as someone seemed, Leo had yet to perfect his method of predictability toward others' tolerance. But being him...
"Your mom named you J?" he scoffed incredulously. "What kind of a name is J?!" The smaller blonde shook his head. "Well yeah why else would I hang around here. It's not like I have a permit for this guy." He gestured to a dozing Scruffy. "I don't have many other options." His voice grew more solemn as his thoughts drifted. His last statement wasn't entirely true. His older brother was out there somewhere but his impermeable stubbornness and impressive ability to hold a grudge for someone so young demanded he not go in search of his only living relative. If the eldest Falkov sibling was even still alive at this point. Besides, Aries was military now; and as cruel as it seemed Leo much preferred the company of the joltik on his lap and wasn't prepared to risk that for someone who left him.
"My name's Leo." He didn't divulge a surname, for good reason too. Firstly being he was a kid on the street now and such a petty thing wouldn't do him much good so he discarded it. The second, and more terrifying scenario, was being recognized. Whether by relation to his brother or his 'sympathizer' parents who'd been captured and presumably killed by the empire. Hell, for all Leo knew they could have been some of those publicly executed at that protest. He genuinely had no knowledge of their fate and liked living. As hard as times were.

◄ Arel's hand gently stroked the pokeball in his pocket at the mention of his Konpe, a bit hesitant to bring him out just yet. Both he and his sister had been well known for their twin Hydreigons- it wasn't exactly a common pokemon to have. They were a fierce breed, normally ruthless in nature. He wasn't sure what exactly had happened to his, seeing as all Kon was ruthless about was his appetite. Ah well, at least the kid hadn't seemed to recognize the name. "Konpeito, my pokemon. And also the name of that candy." Might as well let the poor thing out, right? His baby had been stuffed away for too long now, only coming out in small rooms when it was just the two of them. A quick jerk and Kon was released, the giant three-headed goofball immediately turning to snuggle his trainer- practically knocking him over in the process. "W-woah there, Kon..!" Arel managed to push him off, though his expression had noticeably lightened, now graced with a genuine grin. He slid into a seat, the Hydreigon settling in beside him, heads resting in his lap and on his shoulder with Arel petting him softly. "He's big, but friendly. I promise." He snorted at the J comment. "It's more of a nickname, really." Or, well, not his name altogether. But who was keeping track? "Safer that way." His voice, too, grew softer. "So you don't have anyone else? You're very young.." Besides the fluffball on his shoulder, but a Joltik couldn't very well take care of a human child. Arel almost felt sorry for him. Or maybe he actually did feel sorry. Affection? Was it just because they were in a similar predicament? He couldn't really tell. Either way, it made him uncomfortable. Mingling among commoners had really gotten to him. "Leo.." The smile came back, albeit not as large as before. "It's a nice name." Leo Falkov

When the bright beam dissipated to reveal J's pokemon saliva caught in his throat; which let to a brief session of choking. A dragon?! Seriously?! Dragons alone were rare as heck to come across let alone capture and train. A high class pokemon, a hydreigon no less. He was pretty sure they'd been one of the few creatures who played the role of vicious beats in the bedtime stories his brother would conjure up for him. 'Stop right there.' he ordered the little voice in his head.
In his excitement he picked himself up to stand, forgetting completely about the napping joltik who fell to the ground with an indignant squeak and a narrowed buggy glare. Not that it was intimidating in the least, eve if Leo were paying attention in the first place. Unfortunately for the offended pokemon his human was far to engrossed in the sight of the dragon before him.
"Where did you get a Hydreigon?!" His voice came out as more of an awe-induced whisper. Wide-eyed, he shuffled his feet. Unsure if it was a safe desicion to lessen the distance between him and the massive creature. His worries lessened a bit at the dragon's show of affection toward his master. Although, Leo didn't hold that title in the beast's eyes. "Hmm..."
In a leap of faith and a sliver of bravery (or impulsiveness, he wasn't sure which) he closed the gap. 'Big but friendly...right.' The teen gulped. "You're," He rose his hand toward the shout of the hydreigon's large head, hoping the slight shake wasn't as noticeable as it felt. "You're sure he won't eat me?" Never a bad idea to be sure. After getting a glimpse of those razor-sharp fangs he was now firm in the decision he didn't want to be eaten by a dragon. But having the chance to pet one was too tempting to pass up.
However.
Scruffy would not stand for such blatant dismissal. From his human no less?! The tugging on the boy's worn jeans had gone unanswered, the little pokemon simply not having enough strength to make much of a notice with his small limbs. With a huff, and a surprising show of agility, it took only one jump for the joltik to land on Konpe's snout; meeting the scaled creature's reptilian eyes from behind narrowed lids. A stubby leg moving from his own gaze to that of the dragon's. The I'm-watching-you went unheard but the gesture was obvious enough.
"Tch." Leo scoffed. "Doesn't matter, it's not like I'm complaining or anything. The both of us have been doing fine. It's just a pain when those empire guys get too curious." Yep. A giant pain in his ass. He'd forgotten how many times he'd had to fabricate some kind of story as to why he was travelling alone.
His earlier apprehension forgotten as he reached over to pick the bug up with little to no fear. Perhaps it was the exasperation of his friend's antics. Scruffy seemed to make ample use of the opportunity of movement and repeat his earlier movement; only this time using the distance to further emphasize his silent threat to Konpe. Seeing this, Leo did little more than sigh and hold the joltik to his chest. "I think my mom just liked litleo's too much." He pursed his lips, trying not to blush at the compliment toward his namesake.
"Guess yours must've liked the alphabet or something."

◄ The boy's fear and excitement did not go unnoticed- nor was it unexpected. Kon had been gifted to Arel for a reason- he was a rare and noble pokemon befitting the Beau bloodline. Sure, the Hydreigon hadn't exactly lived up to the family's bloodthirsty expectations, but he was a lethal force in battle nonetheless. The two had proven that time and again. With a soft smile, Arel ruffled his companion's head feathers, earning a contented huff. "Where did I get him?" Well, that one was going to be complicated to answer. No commoner's family would be able to get their hands on such a beast. Kon looked up at him reassuringly, sensing his master's discomfort and nuzzling him. "I got him when he was a Deino. Just a tiny thing from the academy." Believable, sort of. Even a Deino wasn't something to be passed around lightly. If the academy ever did just hand one over, it'd have to be to someone of high stature. Arel wasn't sure if the boy knew this, and sort of hoped he didn't, but at least it was better than saying outright 'I'm a former noble, please hate me.' Kon shook himself, staring as Leo reached out to pet him. He didn't move, confused blinking proving he was unsure of what exactly was going on. Strangers had never bothered to try and pet him before- it was pretty much a death sentence. Touching the lord's pokemon was a huge no-no. Not that Kon knew this. All he knew was that only Arel had ever shown that type of affection before. Well, Arel and sometimes Lily. He grumbled excitedly, pushing his head toward Leo in an affectionate manner. Rururu..! The noise was cut off by Scruffy's leap- surprising him enough to drop his head to the table, eyes criss-crossed in an attempt to view the tiny puffball on his nose. Ruuu...Arel laughed. Loudly. "Joltik got your nose, bud?" He shook his head at the ridiculous scene, patting the big dragon's back. "Trust me, he won't bite without my say so. You can pet him all you like." Why he'd taking such a liking to the kid he didn't know. Maybe it was just easier to sympathize with people when you weren't sitting on a throne. 'Empire Guys'. He supposed that had included him at the time. "Well, they won't bother you about it around here." That much was true. No one had tried to pry about where he'd come from or who he was. It'd eased his anxiety about the whole situation just a bit. "Litleo's huh?" He grinned, teeth flashing. "You sort of resemble one, that's for sure." Cute and energetic. Leo Falkov

Oh. So he was a member of the empire's military force then? Well, that made sense in his mind. He was curious as to why J didn't stay within their ranks, since the set up seemed nice enough for a lot of people to take pride in being recruited and drafted. It was enough for Aries to stay there it seemed. But Leo had the sinking suspicion it had something to do with that scar; so he wouldn't prod as to why he left. "You must be a really strong trainer if they gave you a deino then huh?" With far more reassurance he moved without hesitance to pat along Kon's feathers mane, like he observed the older blonde doing so mere seconds before. Scruffy held firmly in the other with a pout on his face.
"He's just jealous and likes being the center of attention." He explained, feeling the tick had calmed enough to be placed safely on his head to stare distastefully at the affection Leo was showing the hydreigon. "I used to think about joining them too. Being able to train pokemon seemed worth it at first." he began before his expression became more pensive. "But then it didn't seem so worth it anymore..." His parents. The protest. Leo hadn't known any different when it came to experience but even he had some kind of inherent understanding that what was happening in his home wasn't right.
"Hck!" The flush came back full force. "Wha-What's that supposed to mean?!" Of course he tried not to shout full force despite wanting to. He was right next to a carnivorous beast, he'd rather not risk it. Still, the scales beneath the feathers felt nice under his touch. A big difference from Scruffy's coarse fur.

◄ Arel gave him a grim smile, patting Kon's back to reassure him. "I suppose so." Strong indeed, but of a whole different breed than the kind of soldier Leo was thinking of. "He was still a surprise." Still was, honestly. Though the surprise was more his personality. A cuddly, mild mannered dragon. Didn't see those too often, now did you? "He'd probably do anything for candy, really. I once found him nearly passed out in a pile of those little stars I showed you." He paused to give a small wave to Scruffy. "Don't worry, bud. The novelty wears off. You're still adorable." Not that he didn't think Kon wasn't cute as could be, but he didn't want to tiny fluff to worry too much. Pokemon often had a deep attachment to their trainers, and their health could very well depend on that attachment. Kon knew better by now at least- Arel had a bad habit of spoiling friends' pokemon over the years. Leo looked flustered at the litleo comment, eliciting another laugh from the ex-noble. "Well you've got the hair for it." And he had the energy for it. All these huge, expressive reactions were befitting the tiny pokemon, and Leo. "Don't worry, it's cute. I promise." That probably wasn't what the boy wanted to hear. Leo Falkov

'Must. Resist. Urge. To. Bite'
His face may aswell have been hot enough to fry eggs on at this point. And no, he wasn't joking about the biting. Hardly civil but he'd implimented the technique well enough during his getaways when a store-owner's hand got a bit too feely for his liking. Didn't make a habit of breaking the skin though, that's just gross and unsanitary. "Like any guy wants to be called cute!" he fumed.
Sheesh. All the blood rushing to his head was starting to make it ache. Heaving a sigh he turned his attention back to Kon, assessing him. Not doubt he was a force to be dealt with when angered; not something Leo particularly wanted to see but the nagging curiosity was there. It'd suck if he were the cat in the equation as he asked his next question. "You...train with him right?" He gently clasped onto the dragon's coarse tuft of feathers. It was killing him to even think about asking but - he took a brief side glance toward the older male - he seemed nicer than others he'd prompted. Nicer meaning there was a possibility he might not demand anything in return for the help.
"Could you teach us?" A small noise of a clearing throat made Leo glance up to meet a joltik's expectant gaze, "Eh, I mean 'me'?" He received a nod. The boy's eye gave a twitch. What a proud ball of static he was. Like he needed help, of all things! Psh! Scruffy was cut from a finer cloth than that of the average bug. Not that Leo was privy to that information.
