[PTab=BIOGRAPHY]
NOW THAT MY DREAMS TURN BLACK
History
Eurydice was born in a small town within the Greenshore area. As far and beneath the Empire's notice as the town was, it knew very little of the region's grave situation. The people kept to themselves and worked for themselves, living off the land without much outside influence. Eurydice grew up in this life, the daughter of a farmer, but one who quickly found she had more of a talent for hunting than working with crops or livestock. In particular, she was good at hiding her presence and moving quietly, which served her all too well when learning to track and hunt game in the area.
Hers was a simple life, though. Get up, help around the farm as necessary, go hunting with a couple of the adults, and still have plenty of time before sundown for long nature walks or playing hero with the other kids. Eurydice, to put it simply, wanted to be a hero. She knew it was stupid - after all, a small, peaceful town like hers needed no heroes. But it was the dream of a child, and whenever her imagination ran wild it would feed her stories of saving them from some rampaging Pokemon or an invading force from another region. Never the capital though, of course. Most people in Greenshore knew nothing of the situation in the rest of the Empire, and those who did had learned to keep it a secret. It didn't affect them anyway, so why crush their dreams?
But good times rarely last forever, even for small countryside towns. A poor harvest one year, and an even worse one the next, left the town struggling. The town's elders came to realize that they would need to start bringing in outside income as well to survive, and without crops to sell, some of them would have to leave to find other work. Eurydice volunteered, expecting to go to the military and be accepted based on her hunting skill, and become the hero she had dreamed of being. Only one man, a traveler who had fled from Citadel long ago, tried to warn her that the military wasn't what she thought. But Eurydice paid it little mind, believing that she could still find her place in it. She set out on a journey with two other volunteers, but only she made it to Southwall, while the others had gotten lost on the road and never returned. Eurydice continued hoping that they were still together and would show up soon, but they never did. Eventually, Eurydice was forced to keep moving without them. She was accepted as a cadet, but still forced to go through the same training program as everyone from inexperienced hopefuls to future councilors. It was here that she started to realize that traveler's warning wasn't as far off as she thought. Nothing about her training itself surprised her, but the attitude of the soldiers she met along the way was as un-heroic as she could possibly imagine. Rather, many of them seemed like the villains she imagined fighting - ruthless, abusive, and power-hungry. Still, Eurydice thought she could find her own place. Maybe there would be a branch of the military that was still heroic, or that she could somehow change from within.
Her superiors found, upon watching her work, that while she was capable of using the Chimchar she was given to train with to fight in an emergency, Eurydice herself was poor at direct combat and much better at stealth. True to her background as a hunter, she was much more effective when the target didn't see her coming, and could move around without being noticed much more easily than she could charge a line. So when she graduated, she was sent off towards the military's intelligence division. Here, she started to see the true depths that the empire had reached. In her job collecting information, she found much more than she had bargained for: information about the harsh restrictions on the citizenry, information about abuse of power all over, information about the lavish life of nobles and higher at the cost of everyone else around them. And she, as a member of the military, was deemed an enemy too. The would-be hero was forced into using disguises and aliases when talking with others, or else she would be considered just as much an enemy as the soldiers grinding civilians into the dirt all around her.
Then came Newhaven. Eurydice was stationed in the town and, hoping to settle things as peacefully and quickly as possible, fed information to the lord's younger sister, and later to future councilwoman Liliana Bellamie to help them track and deal with rioters without too many of them getting away. The result was a bloodbath. Rather than the mass arrest that Eurydice had expected, the main speaker and many of the rioters were simply slaughtered. The more she realized that they weren't simply going to stop, the more reluctantly Eurydice parted with her information. Eventually, she just claimed she didn't have anything substantial left to give. But between the ruthlessness of the military, and the information of other intel officers on the scene, the riots were eventually put down. The city was locked down, but it had survived the slaughter.
What was left of Eurydice's heroic spirit died there as well. She still kept up a positive attitude when necessary, happily munching on candy and acting the part of a military agent living the good life, but beneat that she just became more and more dead inside. The result of this would be seen a month later, when a childhood friend from Greenshore came looking for her. The young man knew nothing about what had happened since she had left, but had come to deliver news of the town's recovery, and to take news of her back to them. What he found instead was a jaded and cynical young woman, a broken hero whose spirit was long lost. In the resulting conversation, Eurydice asked what had happened to her two comrades, to find that one had returned a month after leaving, with the body of the other. Afterwards, she coldly berated her friend for chasing after her, saying that she was better off lost to them, and especially him. They argued circles around each other for a long time, before he insisted that she had to come back with him, at least for a week or two. She agreed, saying that she could take some time off for it, but on the road back, he would eventually look back to find that Eurydice had disappeared.
"Sorry," she would say, once he was out of earshot, "But I can't go back anymore. I've seen too much of the Empire, and I'd be a stranger there now. Greenshore deserves better than to see what I've become." Silently, she hoped that before he made it back he would come to believe he'd never found her at all.
Months later, she received a new assignment. She was one of several intelligence officers selected to attempt to infiltrate Spectre and spy on them. Eurydice had mixed feelings, but lacking the strength of will to refuse, she accepted the job. Maybe, while she was there, she would be able to find out more about why they fought. That just left the issue of getting in. Fortunately, there would most likely be a chance soon, at the upcoming Newhaven Ball.
