Normally, there would be nothing more out of place than a country girl at a formal ball. Eurydice barely knew how to dress for formal events before leaving the countryside, much less how to act or interact with her social betters. But things were different now. She wasn't a country girl, she was a spy for the military. Or rather she was an ordinary resident of Newhaven who was hurt by the riots a year ago and longed for a peaceful resolution. That was her cover, at least for anyone who didn't immediately knew who she was. It wasn't like anyone except her direct superiors and the recruiter she had first talked to in Southwall knew where Eurydice Ives was from, anyway. She could spin whatever tale she wanted.
And, as it happened, she was fitting in rather well. She had come in an elaborate red dress that she would have never been able to afford (or willing to wear) back home. But for an event like this, it was necessary. A pair of headphones was neatly hidden under her long hair, with the player hidden under the folds of the dress, but at the moment it was switched off. She scanned the growing crowd as she entered. Mostly soldiers and citizens of Newhaven so far, although it seemed like several nobles and councilwomen had shown up as well. Particularly, the senior councilor and the War Goddess were already here and mingling, and she was sure the host of the event was around somewhere. Eurydice was trying to avoid them thus far, though. Actually, she would be much more comfortable just talking with her fellow soldiers for the moment. Her real plan wouldn't come until things went south, assuming they did. And they should, given that this was the perfect event for Spectre to appear...and the perfect trap.
Actually, that was a good point. With so many high-ranking nobles and leaders in the Empire here, would they really be bold enough to show up?
Well, it didn't matter. If they didn't do anything, she'd just find another chance to leave with them. In the meantime, she hung around the punch table, a drink in one hand and one of her favorite lollipops in the other. What kind of person brought candy to a formal event? Eurydice did, apparently.
